A lavalier microphone is essentially a miniature mic with an attachable clip that is usually clipped on to a person’s clothing. In most cases, people often hide the clip-on mic for an added layer of professionalism. Examples of people using a lavalier mic without noticing it’s even on is a TV news anchors, professional interviews, documentaries, most YouTubers, etc. An example of using a lavalier lapel microphone system for an interview could be found in this video here. Regardless of your situation, level, and needs, you will surely find a system that is best suited for you.
Before We Get Started, A Few Things To Keep In Mind About Lavalier Microphone Systems
  • Lapel mic is another word used to describe Lavalier. There is no difference between the terms. Many people call them lav as well.
  • The Lavalier microphones on this list come with a bodypack and receiver. The bodypack (transmitter) is generally attached to your belt or pocket. Lavalier’s that comes with a bodypack enables wireless abilities. Live speakers who use a lavalier mic generally use a lapel with a bodypack.
  • The lavaliers that do not come with a body generally plug directly into a smartphone, DSLR camera, or anything else that takes a 3.5 mm auxiliary.
  • Lavalier microphones are the best placed on the upper chest. Anywhere between your neck and nipple line. However, anywhere in the general vicinity of the audio output is just fine.
  • The best way to hide your lavalier mic is to either use tape or the rode invisilav.

1. Shure BLX14/CVL

Lavalier Microphone Systems
Shure products put a lot of time and effort into quality and durability. They have an incredible process to test and continuously test their products. Coming with the full set-up, the analog Shure BLX14/CVL is one of the highest-rated lavalier microphone systems on the market. It comes with a bodypack, microphone, receiver, clip, two windscreens, and power cables. If you need an affordable full set up lavalier microphone system for live speeches and talks, this is an excellent choice for you! Something I like is the really far range of 300 feet. Any speaker who wants to walk the stage or venue while speaking will be very pleased with the amount of range they could walk. However, the range is a bit shorter in areas that have multiple wireless units running. With the Shure BLX14/CVL, you can use up to 12 systems simultaneously. Providing a frequency response of 50Hz-15kHz and an electret condenser microphone, the sound quality is very good. You will be pleasantly surprised by the clear audio for the low price. It’s easy to set up and use as it automatically selects a clear channel. Surprisingly, this miniature microphone is able to withstand loud volume due to its high SPL of 139dB. This amount of SPL is scarce for a lavalier in this low price range. It also provides an extremely high amount of battery life of 14 hours. Lastly, Shures state-of-the-art quick scan technology reduces the chance of frequency interference by a significant margin. I highly recommend the affordable Shure BLX14/CVL lavalier microphone system for just about any application.

2. Comica CVM-WM100

The Comica CVM-WM100 is a great lavalier lapel mic system that comes with everything you need to get started. Currently running below $200, this system is an excellent value for the low price. However, you can also purchase this system with dual transmitters and lapel dual microphones. The most surprising thing about this unit, in my opinion, is the fantastic range of audio. At first glance, I had a hard time believing the range was 328 feet like it was marketed. We tested it out and were shocked by the results. Not only does it offer roughly 328 feet of range, but the audio remains strong and clear at all times within the long distance. There are a few exceptions. There are a few cutouts if you’re moving a lot after 250 feet. Also, the range is reduced to roughly 60 feet in extremely cold conditions. Speaking of the audio, the Comica CVM-WM100 has a pretty good sound quality for the low price. It is very good at rejecting background noise and wind in basically every environment. To maximize the sound quality in post-editing, I slightly reduced the highs and a minor boost in the low mids. In comparison to the price, the overall quality of sound is outstanding. Rule of thumb, any lavalier is better than no lavalier for a video. There are a few downsides that I noticed about the WM100. For one, you may encounter a few issues with phasing at first. You may need to play with the levels for a few minutes until you get it right. Another thing, it does not have a mid-side mode to increase stereo width. However, most lav systems in this low-budget price range do not offer that feature anyway. Lastly, both units are made of plastic. However, it is a relatively sturdy plastic build! Overall, the few downsides I just mentioned are about standard for a lav system in this price range. If you’re looking for a reliable low-budget unit that produces good range and audio after a few adjustments, the Comica CVM-WM100 is an excellent choice!

Details & Tech Specs

  • Does not have a mid-side mode to increase stereo width
  • Included accessories: Soft travel case, XLR to 3.5 mm cord, micro USB for charging, and dead cat
  • 48 channels, UHF
  • Option to purchase this system with dual transmitters and dual microphones

It offers an enormous bandwidth of 42 MegaHertz and 1680 different tunable frequencies. Along with the automatic frequency scan feature, the vast amount of frequencies to choose from clarifies reliable dependability. You will never have problems with frequency interference with this system. Although it technically still works at 200 feet, many cheaper lapel mic systems cut out at longer distances. Regardless of the weather or fast movement, the Sennheiser EW 112P G3-A keeps a crystal clear signal and the volume doesn’t decrease anywhere within 130 feet. Moving on to the microphone’s sound quality, to my ears, it’s perfect. I honestly could not ask for a more natural, well-balanced, even-toned, and crystal clear sound from such a small microphone at the low price. There is only one downside to this system that I noticed. It does not allow you to purchase an additional transmitter to mic an extra person. This mic is primarily for anyone who only needs to mic one person. Overall, if you’re looking for a professional 1-channel lavalier microphone system for any application, the Sennheiser EW 112P G3-A is our most recommended option. I highly implore you to give this unit a look.

It is incredibly versatile and able to be used for just about any application from broadcast, video, interviews, live talks, and so. To get the Sony UWPD16/14 marvelous sound quality, Sony pulled off something very unique, and it works flawlessly. They use a digital compander while the signal is UHF. Each transmitter, receiver, and cables have their separate cubby within the case. The transmitters and receiver run off of 2 AA batteries providing 6 hours of life. Something many people will find very beneficial is the headphone out jack on the receiver for monitoring. This feature gives you the ability to make certain your audio is clear and precise at all times. With crystal clear sound quality, this unit will surprise you for its low price. It provides an excellent range of up to 400 feet. However, it’s best to switch it to “high strength mode” at distances above 200 feet for optimal audio quality. Something that definitely surprised me about this system is the durable metal casing build quality. There are only a few parts made of plastic. However, it hasn’t posed an issue for me. Overall, the Comica CVM-WM100 is an incredible choice for anyone in need of a high-quality budget-friendly dual-mic lavalier system. I highly recommend it for any application besides live television professional news anchors. I recommend a more top-tier and more expensive system for live television.

6. Sony UWPD11/14

This system is the exact same as the previous Sony UWPD16/14, just without the XLR plug. The Sony UWPD11/14 is the perfect option for professionalism at a lower price, which does not need the plug. I consider this unit in the top-tier category in which it can be used for the most professional settings. It is very reliable, durable, produces excellent sound quality, relatively easy to use, and provides a great range. Coming with the purchase is a shoe-mount adaptor to attach on to cameras easily. 7. FotoWelt WM-200-100

I must say, I was definitely surprised by the high quality compared to the low price with this one. The affordable FotoWelt WM-200-100 is an incredible lavalier microphone system with two transmitters and one receiver. Don’t be fooled by the pictures; you get both lapel microphones for both transmitters with the purchase. Along with all the cables you need to get started, you also get a sturdy and well-designed travel case with the purchase as well. It is a dual-channel, meaning you can use both lavalier microphones with each transmitter at the same time. This is yet another great system for interviews between two people. Not only one of the highest-rated on the market, but it’s also the cheapest dual lapel mic system on this list. With roughly 300 feet of range, you’re going to have more than enough room for most applications easily. At long distances, you will not have any breaks in the audio or cutouts. The sound quality is surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting the audio to be natural and well-balanced between the frequency spectrum. Considering we had no issues, it also does an excellent job with feedback rejection. Regardless of how loud you are or get, this mic does a great job minimizing clipping. The only downside that I noticed about the FotoWelt WM-200-100 is the plastic build. However, there are a few things to keep in mind about the plastic build quality. For one, the only way that this lapel mic system can be at the low-price is due to the plastic build. Transmitters and receivers with metal construction cost much more to create. Thus, the system is priced higher. Another thing to keep in mind is the transmitter and receiver are both made of strong and more durable plastic. I consider this system to have a decent build quality. As long as you take care of your equipment, it should last you an extremely long time. Overall, I definitely recommend this unit for anyone in need of an affordable dual lavalier mic system at a great bang for the buck.

 8. Audio-Technica PRO 70

We decided to save this one for the end for a few reasons. This system is different than the rest in the sense that the transmitter does not come with a receiver. An XLR must be plugged directly into the transmitter. Also, it was primarily designed for musical applications such as acoustical instruments. Another way it can be best used is by people who need a low-budget, simple lavalier for videos in your home. Nonetheless, the affordable Audio-Technica PRO 70 is a dependable Lavalier Microphone. It produces clear sound quality with its mini condenser microphone. With this purchase, you get both the microphone and bodypack along with a clip, windscreen, and travel case. This mic is great for minimizing background noise due to its cardioid polar pattern, making it much easier to use it in a noisy environment. For anyone trying to use this lavalier outside, the included good-quality windscreen helps eliminate wind pickup. If that doesn’t do the trick, the low-end roll-off will put the icing on the cake. Overall, this lavalier mic produces clean audio regardless of your environment. Versatility is a massive benefit with the Audio-Technica PRO 70. Not only does it pick up great audio for the human voice, but it does a fantastic job for instruments as well. It works surprisingly well for any type of acoustic stringed instrument. A few examples that tested well would be acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, ukulele, mandolin, and classical guitar. To sum it up, the Audio-Technica PRO 70 quickly made our top 10 with its great sound, versatility, decent build, and affordable price. I highly recommend it for anyone on a budget.
